Re: batteries

'Alan,
How many amp-hrs of batteries you need really depends on how you use the coach.
If dry camping, you need MORE.  If mostly in CG's with 120 VAC, LESS.

Re: question on breaks

'Robert,
We will need more information on your BRAKES to answer the question. You are right at the point where you could have either:

Hydraulic disk brakes with hydraulic boost or air brakes?
Parking/emergency brake spring applied, hydraulic replaced OR spring applied, air released?

Re: Serpentine belt ? (was: Coolant leak)

'YES, the engine water pump on a Caterpillar 3126 is on a separate V belt.  But the fan that pushes air through the CAC and radiator are on the serpentine belt.

Need BOTH belts (and proper tension) for proper cooling.

Re: Coolant leak

'Pay close attention to what broke that serpentine belt.  Make sure all accessories turn freely (bearings are OK). Alternator, automatic belt tensioner and fan hub need to be checked. AND IMPORTANT,  there is a grease zirk on your fan hub-- IT DOES NEED TO BE GREASED at normal chassis service interv...

Re: Coolant leak

'Another cause of overheating on the Caterpillar 3126 is a loose water pump belt. It is a V belt and NOT on an automatic tensioner.  Pain in the back side to get to with a rear radiator.  Replacement requires removal of the serpentine belt as well. But, number 1 (actually #1-5) cause of overheating ...

Re: Battery Charging Repost

'Marty, You might try resetting the remote.  Unplug it at the inverter for 10 minutes or so, than plug it back in. If that doesn't work disconnect the large gauge ground cable to the inverter and make sure shore power and generator are off. May not "fix it", but not much invested in trying...

Re: Batterry Charging

'Marty,
Don't rely on the idiot lights for verification of charging.
Use a digital voltmeter (a "must have" on any RV).  They start under $20.
Before plugging in/starting the generator, check battery voltage at the HOUSE battery bank.  Plug in and check again.  Let us know what you find.

Re: Battery Charging

'Puzzling.
Power share/power save feature is denoted by the number of amps at 120 VAC that can be dedicated to battery charging.
Even if set on the lowest setting of 5 amps, that still allows for around 40 amp @ 14 VDC.

Re: Battery Charging

'Interesting.
With brand new batteries, quite surprised that even 5 amp power share/power save would be an issue. That is a charge rate of 50 amps or so.

Re: Battery Charging

'Marty, Have you confirmed that your 6 VDC batteries are wired in SERIES: House positive to positive battery #1 Negative of battery #1 to positive of battery #2 Negative of battery #2 to house ground. Put a voltmeter from the leads that go to the house (positive to ground).  What do you get before p...
