'Shallow sump on Caterpillar 3126 is STEEL (a magnet will quickly identify it). It is smooth. 

The deep sump is ALUMINUM.  It is ribbed..

'For oil capacity (depend on shallow or deep pan, call the Caterpillar RV hotline with your engine serial number:877 777-3126.  THAT is the safest answer.
Strongly recommend using Caterpillar oil and secondary fuel filters.  Available at any Caterpillar dealer.

'Another possibility is that the head of the dipstick came off and that the dip stick itself is still in place.
Worth a look with flash light and/or needle nose pliers.

'The dipstick is NOT an engine manufacturer part (Caterpillar in your case).  The chassis maker (Safari/Magnum) speced and installed it.  Check with RV wrecking yards and/or have someone with the same engine (and same pan-- shallow or deep) measure their dipstick. IF, repeat IF you are safe working around 240 VAC, remove the lid for the ATS with shore power OFF, generator OFF, inverter OFF:
Check wires for signs of overheating.  Check connections for tightness.
Only then can you evaluate an ATS's performance.
