Fire escape windows - how to use?

Post by chuckster »

I have an ‘01 Zanzibar 3646 side entry and It looks like there is a window in the living area slide out area that has a red window latch and one in the bedroom but I do not see any escape hatch windows levers. How do these work? I may need to pop one open to get some new 26” wide furniture inside since my side entry is angled and I barely have 24” no matter how I slice it or dice it without removing cabinet by the door and the refrigerator and it’s cabinet. Not a desired way to get this done so was wondering if I should bring it through the escape window. I don’t relish the thought of removing the passenger side windshield in order to do it either.

Thoughts?

chuckster,
If you need a larger opening than any FULLY OPEN sliding EXIT WINDOW provides you will have to temporarily remove a complete window, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yps3VbOE_Vg) .... or a windshield glass.

 So, what makes these considered emergency windows? Just because they slide open? WOW.

Got one windshield quote method....$1600. They will not remove one windshield and put it back. They will not come and remove and then come back a day later so I can load furniture thru windshield. Apparently the roof will sag overnight and make putting windshield back in impossible or very difficult!

"Hello Chuck, there is always a high chance of stress cracks when we remove and reinstall the same windshield, which could not be warrantied. If the seal needs to be replaced, both the driver and passenger sides need to come out. We would need to do the removal and reinstall the same day as the roof will sag with both pieces out if left overnight. The price for the removal and reinstall of both sides and the new seal will be $1,600+tax. We can do this Early to mid February mobile if you would like to proceed."

Any window with an opening at least 5.7 square feet, 20 inches wide by 24 inches high, and no higher than 44 inches from the floor meets the legal description/requirement of an egress window.

My feeling is that any window that is bigger than my big butt is an emergency window. RVs need an egress escape other than the door in both the forward and rear of the door or kitchen propane appliances and on the opposite side of the door

Hi,
Two years ago we bought a 1995 chassis - 1996 body, Safari Trek. 454 ci (7.4 l) Chevy engine. I looked at these posts and some YouTubes to get some insight on how the single driver's side fire escape window works. It is labeled as such, and has a red locking handle, but is very hard to operate. It appears the only way to use it is to open it wide open (one fixed glass, the other a slider), kick the screen out, and jump out. I could do this, but am not sure my wife could. Looking for information from anyone that has figured out how to use this.
Thanks.

Check out videos made years ago by "Mac, the Fire Guy" on YouTube. Sadly, Mac is no longer with us. He used to present seminars at RV rallies where he would demonstrate safety related topics as they relate to RVs. This link is one he made about using the escape windows. There are many more in the sidebar.

My screens slide open in the track as do most. I know this because I get beer given to me through the window and I have not had to "kick out" a single  screen. Again any window large enough to get out of IS an escape window.

Well, after reading these posts (thank you all for sharing your knowledge here) I spent a couple of hours thoroughly cleaning and lubricating some very "stuck" windows and screens. Interestingly enough, they now work great - we can slide them open and shut with one finger and my fire escapes are readily available! So, with appreciation for your help, I'll be over in the corner with my dunce cap on. :?
