1998 class C OBD1 or OBD2

Post by curry »

We have a 1998 24 foot class C Safari. None of my OBD2 scanners will connect correctly. The air bag light is on and the only thing I get is no connection. Multiple sites have said that by law it has to on a sticker under the hood that says it is one of the other. There is no sticker or evidence if one under the hood. It is 14,000 vehicle weight and some people posting have said that the rules are different over 14,000.
Dies anyone know anything about this. The Safari is built on a Ford E Super Duty van frame.

It's an OBD2.
OBD1 was dead in the early 90s.

Hi. My garage had the contract to maintain our cities fleet of busses that were Ford E 350 and 450. This was from 1995 to 2000. Most of the vehicles were year models 1995 to 1998. All had OBD2 stile 16 pin connectors to access the engine management system. All of these used the OBD 1 engine the management system. That means 2 digit codes. They used KOER and KOEO. Ford OBD1 testing just as before. Set your scan tool up for OBD1. The reason for this is Ford had 1000’s of OBD1 computers and wiring systems for the F series trucks. The federal rule at the time was for lighter duty trucks to comply. Heavy duty came into the emission ruling a few years later. I found this out from a Ford FSE, Field Service Engineer .Hope this info helps….I am retired now and have not forgotten those confusing busses.

The class C Safaris include many Ford E series van frames, as well as Chevys.
