RE: Safarifriends will be going dark

This forum is a good place to discuss non-Safari stuff like destinations, travel info, etc.

My thanks to everyone on this site and especially all of the help I have from members. I have a rare Class C, I guess, but people here have been great.
Thanks for every thing.

Dear members, please check the announcement posted by Duane, who is one of the admin moderators, and comment on ideas or suggestions.
We thank Pete for all his selfless work and contributions to keeping this site going after yahoo dropped us. Our heartfelt condolences Pete's family.

Here is the link to the announcement, in case you have not seen it yet: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=40493

Also, what dfeigin posted, regarding gathering an email list, as a backup in case the group goes dark before we are able to transition, is a good idea (see link below). The only thing I would suggest doing differently regarding gather emails, is I would leave members locations as optional inclusion in the list, for personal privacy reasons.

Hi there. I just joined a week or so ago as I bought a 99 Zanzibar and was looking for information and a community. Looks like I joined at a not-so-great time. Anyways, I have a hosting plan at Dreamhost which is sitting idle and can possibly host the site. However, to do it with fewer issues, we need access to the server-side of things in order to migrate the site over. If anyone has access to that, or knows of another way to move things, let me know and we can try to make it work.

Cheers,
Denny

Please reach out and send a PM to Duane (05Wingrider), he is the only active moderator who has very limited Admin access. Maybe you both can figure something out that would allow a practical transfer of files.

Thank you for offering. You may have actually come at the best time, to help save this group. ;)

I emailed Brian Pete on 12/27 to volunteer to either help or try to take over the site. I am not on here very often so afraid I may be too late in reacting/responding to this situation.

Thanks John. I’ll send a PM to Duane.

If we don’t end up having any server-side access, I believe there may be some challenges to migrate data, user info, etc. But, I’m no expert and will gladly work with anyone who knows better.

Cheers,
Denny

After seeing what Duane posted about his access, I don’t think there’s much we can do outside of mirroring the existing site in order to preserve what’s here. And then, we would either need to rebuild this community elsewhere or join an existing community.

I will look into a way to mirror it, unless someone else is already on it. I would also suggest that someone download any important files or attachments (owners manuals, schematics, etc.) and be keeper of those files until a solution is found.

And if anyone has actually started an email list, please add me. If anyone wants to PM me with their email, I can keep a list as well and update as we move forward.

Hopefully, we find a solution soon.

Happy Sunday.
I've made several attempts at mirroring "www.safarifriends.org" SF using a tool called "wget";
https://www.gnu.org/software/wget/manual/wget.html
The application driving the SF site is called "phpBB";
https://www.phpbb.com/
While it doesn't have the complexity of a helicopter, it does require a few parts needing to run in-sync with each other.
We don't have the privilege level required to gain access to the server and manipulate files as needed.
As an example, the files retrieved by wget look like this in a directory listing:
-rw-r--r-- 1 dio dio 25058 Dec 29 11:57 'search.php?search_id=active_topics&sid=3f7c461a4198af6690cf7e6ba0ade107.html'
-rw-r--r-- 1 dio dio 67016 Dec 29 11:57 'search.php?search_id=unanswered&sid=3f7c461a4198af6690cf7e6ba0ade107.html'
-rw-r--r-- 1 dio dio 14275 Dec 29 11:57 'search.php?sid=3f7c461a4198af6690cf7e6ba0ade107.html'
-rw-r--r-- 1 dio dio 35429 Dec 29 11:57 'index.php?sid=3f7c461a4198af6690cf7e6ba0ade107.html'

There is a database as part of the phpBB app that maintains sanity between the filenames and their content, but it too requires advanced privileges to access it.
Ideally login and ftp access would be the most efficient methods to replicate the site.
I'll keep making attempts, but utilising the tools available and the privileges I have is akin to walking past a window, taking a photograph of the contents as seen from the outsite, and understanding the layout of the structure and the functionality of the contents. Sorry.
Stay safe

Input needed asap on what options you all would like to see if this site can't be saved. I believe some members have the legacy files saved on their personal hard drives, which is where most of the knowledge is. So the question is what would you all prefer?

Some of the options have been suggested to join another group that is willing to take us, and the legacy files that are loaded with all sorts of useful info. Some of those options are Monacoers group, Safarianddiselcoaches group, possibly starting a safari chapter on IRV2 forum, Trektraxs? All of this is on contingency if they would be willing to take us and our large legacy files. I think the most like group that would take us on would be Safarianddieselcoaches.

Another option is starting another forum with the same name safarifriends

Please give feed back, and also any other ideas/suggestions...

why could we not be joined with Safari International it is in the best interested for all safari owners. We should contact then and the President of Safari international. That is I assume you all pay your dues. But not sure that will help I have not seen a safari tails in over a year. But is a suggestion.
