Bogus accounts and posts

Post by safari-admin ยป Tue Nov 05, 2019 8:37 pm
Greetings!

As you may have noticed, this forum has been flooded with new user accounts and gibberish posts, no doubt due to script kiddies renting a botnet or some such.

Effective immediately, the requirement to confirm new user accounts by clicking a link in the notification email is restored. Accounts that are not confirmed are subject to deletion at the moderators' discretion.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for any inconvenience.

How does that affect those of us with already established Safarifriends.org accounts?
Is some additional action required by us to confirm our account?
If so please explain where and how to do that.
Thanks

Mel, this should be transparent to those of us that are already registered and recognized - as in, no action is needed to continue posting for us. The ones that will see this are the new requests since it will require some sort of action from them (usually a response).

As Duane explained, no additional action is required for members whose accounts are already active.

For new members, the sign-up process now leverages the prospective member's valid email address, to which a notification email will be sent after registration. In that email will be a link for them to click to activate their account, with no further action required by them or admins/moderators afterwards.

Should those pesky spammers figure out a way to compromise the email activation system, then we'll be forced to enable the requirement for admins/moderators to manually activate a new account request, but we'll cross that bridge only if we come to it.
