1993 Safari Kalahari

Post by Jonesdnl »

We have a 1993 Safari Kalahari with a 6.5 turbo diesel and 4L80 GM transmission. It is a 30 foot pusher. I am looking for any information I can get on drivetrain, electrical, etc.. Are there any other Kalahari owners here?

Are you sure you have a GM tranny? My 94 Kalahari is also 30' with the 6.5, but has an Allison 542 four speed transmission. I have all the manuals that came with it, but they are pretty sparse on info. I will help if i can.

Yes mine has the GM tranny with the big Park Brake assembly on the rear. It is good to connect with other Kalahari owners as I do not think there are many. I am in need of any electrical diagrams you might have. Something that covers the fuse panel on firewall. One is for the step but lost on the rest.

IMO every "Allison Transmission", (years 1929 -2007), is an "Allison Transmission from GM".
(Because in1929 GM purchased Allison Engineering Company...In 2007 Gm sold the Allison Transmission Company to the Carlyle Group and Onex Corporation).

You threw me a ringer. My transmission has the park brake assembly on the rear of the transmission. My shifter is on the column like a standard automobile. I thought Allisons had the push button setup on the side consul. Am I wrong? Where would it be identified? I know about Allison’s being from GM.

I don't know how to determine which Allison transmission SMC used in any of their coaches.
Sorry

I believe every "Allison" transmission from years 1929 -2007 is an "Allison transmission from GM".
Mel,

That is incorrect. Automotive transmissions made by GM, such as the TH350, TH400, 700R4, 4L80, are GM transmissions and have nothing to do with Allison transmissions. When Allison was owned by GM, they were part of the Detroit Diesel Allison Division (DDA), and only made transmissions for medium and heavy duty trucks and off road construction equipment, like the earth mover trucks. BTW, on July 28th of 2007, GM sold the Allison division.

Since Allison Transmission Company was a division of GM in 1996 who then do you suppose made the MD3060 Allison transmission in my coach?

OK, not sure this is going anywhere.

Irrespective of corporate ownership, the Allison 542 is completely different than the Chevy/GM TH350, TH400, 700R4, 4L80.

Probably worth crawling under and copying the model and serial number off the plate on the transmission itself. If not one, take a picture of it and we can tell you what you have.

I have been under the Kalahari several times. There is no ID plate. It does say Hydromatic. If I can figure out how to attach a picture I will.
