Re: Tire history (was:Tires)

Post by TD »

'Mel,

Thank you for the feedback.

As for the Goodyear G159 tires:
Did they show any weathering/cracking when you replaced them?
How did the tires look on the inside?
How did they wear, any odd wear issues?
How did they handle and ride compared to the Michelin tires?

As for the Michelin XZE tires:
Considering that your replacement "warrantied" tires were almost 4 years old, they should not have charged you $45 per tire, but better than no warranty at all...

Besides the cracking issues, how do you like these tire, do they ride smoother and handle better?

Again, thank you for the feedback!

My Coach is currently on the 4th set of 6 tires.

I "aged out" 2 sets of Goodyear 9R22.5 G159 tires.
The 1st set, (original on my coach from SMC), were replaced in '03, (at 52K miles).
The 2nd set, (also Goodyear G159 tires), were replaced with Michelin XZE tires in 2011, (after another 70K miles).

The 3rd set of 6 tires, (Michelin 9R22.5 XZEs), developed sidewall cracks 3-1/2 years later...and
were replaced under warranty in 2014... at a cost to me of $870, ($45 per tire).

My coach is currently riding on that set of "warranty replaced tires"..... however they were already nearly 4 years old when Michelin supplied them in Nov of 2014... they were manufactured in April of 2011, (per the DOT date stamp).

Jim,

Thank you for the feedback! People rarely give feedback on tires at the end of their service life, which is when the information is most useful. Instead you usually get feedback and comments on tires when they are new, and how great they are. Of course new tires are usually great, it's how they perform throughout their "life cycle" is the information that is useful.

Did you happen to look at the inside of those old tires? If yes, did they appear to look in good shape on the inside?

Did your coach handle and ride well with these tires?

The tires looked about the same on the inside as the out.
As for the ride and handling -- ride was good (if you lowered pressure
to the weight of the coach)
Handling was very good and consistent till the day they took them off.

The Goodyear G159 tires looked good inside and out and had no unusual wear when I replaced them.
I switched to Michelins in 2011 because Goodyear no longer made the G159s... and because I believed that Michelins were a superior tire.....(what a disappointment that turned out to be)!

However both the Goodyear G159s and the Michelin XZEs rode well... and neither caused any handling problems.

As for the Michelin warranty procedure was  PITA.
It took 3 summer months, from inspection to replacement, during which I could not drive my coach, and resulted in 8-10 "not very pleasant" phone conversations with Michelin Customer Care... and, in the end, cost me $45 per tire... for 4 year old tires).
I would be much happier today if I had purchased good tires in the first place.

BTW the 1st price quoted to me was not the $45.00 per tire I payed... It was $2,800.00, ($466.66 per replacement tire).

'Mel,

Wow! It sounds like if it was not for your persistent phone calls, you would have gotten the proverbial flip of the bird. Not to mention 3 months of nice summer travel lost that you can't get back. It will be interesting how well the current set of Michelins hold up...

Anyone else have feed back on various brand tires that the had on their coach long term???  Good or bad, feedback is helpful to all...

Thumbs up on weighing the coach to determine the correct tire pressures.

BTW I run 90 psi in the fronts and the same 95 psi in the rear duallys as you.

'Hi all, just bought a new to me Safari Trek 29 ft. 2002. I need to replace the tires. The independent truck tire store in my town is recommending Sumitomo tires. Anyone know anything about these tires.
Thanks, Kom
