StephenI don't believe the fuel tank vent hoses on Safaris are to small...(mine is 5/8"- 3/4" ID).
If the fuel fill is slow because the fuel foams in the fiiler neck and constantly shuts the the pump nozel OFF, it is undoubtedly caused by a droop/sag in the vent hose vent or the vent hose is routed wrong!
BTW, I still only use the small pump nozels, (but I don't have to trickle in the last 20-25 gallons, like I did before Steve P. fixed my vent hose).
That saves 30-45 minutes at each fuel stop!

Truck filler nozzles are larger in order to fill the tanks quicker. A typical 'standard' pump will fill at the rate of 3-5 gallons per minute. This is the size most of our Safaris were designed around, hence the smaller vent tube.
A truck filler nozzle fills at the rate of 20-25 gallons per minute.
When you have to pump 100 to 200 gallons per fill (as trucks do), and you're running a time constraint like your DOT clock, time is of the essence.
Flying J's have separate fill areas for RVs, Loves, Pilots, TA, Petro all have diesel nozzles up with the auto section, and most have plenty of room for RVs with Toads to negotiate.
As diesel RVs became more common, fill nozzles were upsized and in the larger rigs, dual side fill ports were added to take advantage of the truck island slave pumps as well as fill rate.

My vent hose must be mounted properly as I use the large nozzles every chance I get. They fill so much faster than the small nozzles. I have the foam issue like anyone with a diesel but that’s only the last few gallons. From: Safarifriends@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Safarifriends@yahoogroups.com]

Where would I find my fuel tank vent hose and what is its purpose? My fuel tank fill cap is just past the driver side window.

Re: Truck stop filler Nozzles...
The fuel filler vent hose connects to the top of the tank at one end then connects to the fuel fill at the top of the neck. The purpose is to allow the air to escape so the fuel does not get blown back up the fuel fill tube and the trapped air pushes its way out. It is good practice to inspect this vent hose periodically as fuel can leak from this vent hose if the tank is full.

Fuel tank vent hose (was: Truck stop filler Nozzles...)
Dave
On my coach the "fuel tank vent hose" goes from a fitting on the top of the filler neck, (up near the fuel cap opening)...down to a fitting on the top of the fuel tank,,,(the hose itself is right on top of, and runs with, the "filler hose").
I believe it's purpose is to allow the air in the tank to escape as fuel is pumped in....(it may also allow makeup air into the fuel tank as fuel is being used, although the fuel cap is also vented to allow air in).
Apparently, if the vent hose has a sag/droop in it, the droop retains/traps fuel.
When fuel is pumped in, that trapped fuel is forced up the vent hose into the filler neck by the escaping air, causing the pump nozzle to shut off repeatedly after the fuel tank is 1/2 full.
Be aware: I'm not a fuel/air flow, (or a Safari), expert, (nor do I pretend to be).
Much of the information I post is speculation based on experimentation and observation......(aka: my best guess).

Re: Fuel Tank vent hose (was: SLOW diesel fill fix) (was: Truck stop
This is my first post...I hope it goes well.
I purchased my 1994 Safari Continental Prestige this past summer....with the comment from the past owner who had been with the coach since it was 3 years old....that he had never been able to get more than 60 gallons of diesel in the 105 gallon tank. I tried hard, but found the same experience over the past year. I had my mechanic re-route the vent hose, with no change.
Just today the light in my cranium went off!
I went to the same pump that I always use at the truck stop (small filler nozzle), but this time I held the nozzle upward, forcing the filler downward and away from its normal resting stop on the roof of the filler tube in the coach. (you see, I had noticed that the vent hose attaches to the roof of the filler hole just inside the coach, at the point that it transitions to the filler tube.
Walla!, yipi kaya, jump up and down......it worked.
You see, all this time whenever the coach was being filled with fuel, the filler nozzle would rest upward against the roof of the filler tube, almost entirely blocking the vent hose!
I filled more slowly(as others have suggested), and my arms were aching by the time I got done (I've got to create a "holder" to hold the nozzle at that angle), but I got 98 gallons in that puppy!
So....that was my fix to this problem!

That is an excellent tip.
I'm sure it will be helpful to those of us with the common "slow fill" problem.
Thanks
