Gen set and bad fuel

Post by jimbowenintex »

1998 Serengeti - bad fuel problem.
For almost 2 years I have been tracking a generator problem - where the gen set would stop as if you had
hit the stop button.  It seemed to be happening more often when I hit the Pack Brake or braked hard.  I was thinking there had to be a short some where. After myself, my son, 2 mechanics all could not find anything -
I took the coach to Cummins in Houston.  They dropped the gen set and fully tested it --- nothing wrong with gen set.
They did find rust in the fuel.  I have always used Diesel Kleen and Biobor JF Diesel Biocide.  I changed main
filters as well as gen set filter and thought all was well.
They found so much rust in my tank that they said it would have to be polished more than one time. We did not polish the fuel.
The corrective action was not cheap but seems to have worked.
1.
The tank was pulled down by Cummins. They basically have lifts that lift each tire up in the air. They then take the front axle down and hold the rv up by industrial jack stands. The fuel tank was picked up by Hearts radiator they do all kinds of tank cleaning. Basically strip it down put an new liner in it and bake it. That comes with a 5 year warranty on it as well.
2.
They also installed new fuel lines to the generator because they were falling apart.
3.
They also installed a new fuel sender in the tank.  The sender was found on http://revrvgroup.com/service/parts.asp.
Maybe this will help others.

I forgot to add - Cummins said they have been seeing this often with
the new bio-fuel on the market.
Also Justin McDonald, in-shop service supervisor was very helpful.

Jim,

I hear that in some area of the country they are mixing up to 10% Ethanol with diesel fuel, this would surely create rust issues like you are describing...
Glad that all is well. How much did they charge to bake your tank???

You must be eating lost of meatless pasta since the repair. Boy, something else to worry about.
Did I mention the story whey my 40 gallon LP tank developed a pin hole leak just after I filled it and had 3 fire company's and about 120 firemen up and down our street. It was quite the event and just after a two story house exploded from a leaking gas line. Person on the second floor taking a bath in a cast iron tub wound up on the first floor with no serious injuries.

I would have to get paper work - but think the co. that reworked the
tank charged
about $1000. This included the new sending unit (about $350). Cummins
did the
removal and install of tank.
