2003 Trek info and request for input

Post by Jim »

'I drove the new 2003 Safari Trek yesterday. The model that I drove
was the 2610 which, at 26' 7", is essentially the same length as the
2002 models 2430 and 2480. There are a few minor differences between
the 2002 and 2003 models and a couple of major differences.

The first major difference is that, with the Workhorse Chasissis, the
GVWR has gone from 15,000 lbs in 2002 to 17,000 lbs in 2003. The
practical benefit is that the Cargo Carry Capacity (CCC) has gone
from around 900 lbs to around 2,000 lbs. This relieves one of my
major concerns about buying the Trek. Has anyone found the low CCC
of the Treks to be an issue?

The second major change is that, whereas the base list price has
actually gone down for 2003, many of the features that were standard
on the 2002 are now options on the 2003. These include the Full Body
Paint, the Solar Panels, and the duel pane windows. A, somewhat,
apples to apples comparison (adding in the price of the new options)
shows that the list price has actually gone up from around $96.8K to
almost $101K or about a 4% increase. I am not for sure the list base
price has meaning anyway since all of the Treks I have seen on lots
have enough options to bring them to around $108K.

Can anyone give me information on approximately how much they have
ended up paying off of the list price of the Trek? Information on
other models might be helpful also. I know that I could get the 2002
cheaper since they would like to get it off of the lot, but I am
concerned about the low CCC.

"Mildew" in the Shower

Post by zeketheelder »

'On labor day we were skimming down the center of Oregon toward our
home in San Diego when I remembered that Safari had give birth to our
1999 Trek somewhere nearby. At the next stop we looked up the town
and since we were right there we pulled in. The Monaco plant has a
nice RV park (if you have one of there coaches) and its all free so
we spent the night. We met some fine folks in for minor repairs and
some who had been camped for weeks waiting for parts. Some were
happy campers some were not.

In the morning we met some of the customer support people and had a
chance to ask a few questions. One of the crew came out to our motor
home to take a look at a couple of things that we had questions
about. The principal question was the black `stains' in the
shower
up next to the skylight. We said that we had read, on the Yahoo
group, that it was mildew but that we couldn't kill it with
standard
cleaner. He said that it didn't look like mildew but was
probably
from road dust and exhaust leaking into the shower area. The good
folks at Monaco gave me a length of Ozite to replace the discolored
stuff in the shower.

When we made it home I gave the skylight a good hosing down and
carefully looked for any leaks on the inside – there were none.
The
black stuff wasn't coming in through the skylight seal. I then
pulled back the Ozite and saw the problem. Each place that had a
black patch on the outside also had a hole in the plywood framing at
the top of the shower. Long slits were in the plywood that
corresponded to long black blotches on the Ozite. Road dust, tar and
exhaust must be coming up inside the wall and leaking into the shower
carrying all the dirt and grime with it.

The next step is to seal the plywood frame with some sort of sealant
and glue up the new Ozite strips. I'll tell you how it works out.

'the markup on treks has historically been right at 30%
choosing the factory pickup option gives you more flexibility in dealer
choice.. but u have to decide how much local dealer support is worth (my 98
coach has never been seen by the dealer)
hard dealing, and no trade in, should yield a price of @ 75% of list... and
you possibly can't get that early in the model year
if you trade, to get this price, you must expect the dealer to give u
wholesale value for your trade

'Jim,

Thanks for the input. I have nothing to trade so that could make it
simplier. If I could get 20 to 25% off the MSRP that would be
great. I would like to deal with the local dealership, but would not
go there at a great disadvantage in price.

Thanks again.

That's what the customer service people at Monaco called it. Its
the stuff on the ceiling. I used to call it `mouse fuzz' for

'Zeke,

Thanks for the heads-up on the shower stain . I have a 98 2830 that
has the same problem. Will be taking the "Ozite" down this weekend
and sealing it. Did you have any difficulty in removing it on your
coach? I will be reusing the existing Ozite and should, hopefully, be
able to reattach with high quality contact cement.

Thanks,

Rick

'No difficulty Rick but remember its not the attachment of the Ozite
that's the problem - Its the poor fit on two joining plywood pieces
behind it that causes the leak. Also I'm not sure you could clean
the Ozite after its been glunked up like mine was.

'Understand the real problem being the joining of the plywood. Had a
gap behind the coach on the floor that was almost a 1" seperation and
7" long. Easy one to find because you could see the daylight coming
in. Will see how well I can clean up the Ozite. Sounds like your leak
may have been worse than mine. I'll let you know how I make out.

This sounds like it may be a good candidate for a "Trek Talk"
paragraph or two.

Thanks again,
Rick
