Oshkosh WI area usage/tryout starting 19July thru 23July ??
Hello. I've been a member now for a month plus. I've been checking out what can go wrong with the Safari coaches trying to understand if I want to jump in head first into ownership of a late 90's coach. I believe I have found one on the left coast but I live in the midwest. I will be traveling to Oshkosh to camp out all week for the EAA flyin starting Sunday. Is there anyone in that area that would be willing to rent out their coach for a trial? I could even utilize it at your local space but would prefer onsite at the grounds. I'd really like to get a hands on trial to see If I should even proceed. Anyone??
Thanks
JT

Re: Oshkosh WI area usage/tryout starting 19July thru 23July ??
Terry, Since the kitchen is in the slide, I would look at the water line that feeds the kitchen from the coach. It has to move when the slide is extended so there may be a kink in the hose. My Safari did not have a slide so I am not familiar with how they route the hoses. Terry,
I'd take off the aerator from the faucet and clean it out. Since it's the one sink affected, it may be clogged with mineral and small rock deposits stuck there.
You probably checked that already, but just in case!

Re: Oshkosh WI area usage/tryout starting 19July thru 23July ??
JT,
As you have found, asking to rent a personal coach is a difficult proposition. The risks way outweigh any reward any rental price could bring. Finding parts for these older coaches is a challenge, repairing damage is expensive - if you can find a good repair facility willing to work on an older motorhome, repairs often create areas for water intrusion... plus the down time while the coach sits in the shop waiting for parts or repair is time lost for the owner.
There are many advantages to buying an older coach. Lower initial cost probably being the biggest. I think the Safari's were well designed, had many options and with the aluminum exterior, the coach looks great! All motor homes will have issues. If you're handy, you'll be able to take care of a lot of the little things. The help you get from this forum is immeasurable. I think I read everything available on the internet about the Safari's!
Newer coaches have a few pluses - but the ones we looked at were at least 3-4x cost, seemed to be a little underpowered for the size and put together with cheaper components. I'm not sure fuel economy has improved much (more than 2-3 mpg) for the larger rigs over the years. YMMV.
What we finally did was look for the engine, layout, condition and price we were willing to pay. It took me around a year to get all those things lined up. We ended up traveling from Portland to the Denver area for our coach. Driving it back home was a great adventure (including replacing the alternator!) and gave us a good test run to see if we were suited for RV travel. So far, so good with several more trips in the planning stages now.
We decided that the style of travel we wanted to do (exploring the US, biking, hiking, while eating our own cooking and sleeping in our own beds) was best while we are in good physical shape. I'm so glad we decided to pull the trigger. I would have spent the rest of my life thinking "what if we had..."
My advice (worth what you paid) is jump in if you think you want to do this. Be prepared to have a few bumps in the road and embrace the journey. You'll be glad you did.
Best wishes,
Kay '98 Sahara 30' 3126 CAT
