Brake caliper 1996 sahara

Post by burch1945 »

Does anyone know the  Correct part number for the brake caliper rear axle for a 1996 Sahara ? I put calipers own but they were the wrong ones ( Had 2" pistons not 3") and have thrown the old ones away.  Napas fault for sending me the wrong ones. My fault for not noticing.   Braking power is seriously reduced. Any help will be appreciated. Joe Burch 1996 Sahara3126 cat

' Joe,The number I've got down is an SE8556 from Napa, and my notes say it's a 2.88" bore.  Hopefully someone else will either confirm or correct this if I've got bad info?

'Joe BurchI know that the Napa p/n UP-7149-M are the correct brake pads for my '96 Sahara however I'm not sure that the Sahara uses the 2.88 bore caliper.
I could be incorrect but I believe that the bore of the Sahara master cylinder is smaller than the bore of the Serengeti master cylinder....(Methinks a vehicle with a smaller bore master cylinder might use smaller bore calipers).

Joe,
You stated that Napa gave a caliper with 2 pistons not three? Are you
saying that your old calipers had 3 pistons???
I never seen a 3 piston caliper on a safari. Maybe this was custom modified?
Are your wheels/rims six hole or ten hole?
What is the part number of the (wrong) calipers that they did give you?

'Mel,

Thank you for catching that. I think my mind might be scrambling, I
need to read more carefully.

Different bore sizes? (was: Brake caliper 1996 sahara)

Post by mel96safari »

'John
I once had Magnum chassis manual from '95 or '96 which included the measurements of both the master cylinder bore sizes and caliper bore sizes. If I recall correctly the bore sizes were different (smaller) on the Sahara than on the other Safari models.
Do you know anything about that?
Thanks

'Mel,

I don't recall seeing that in my manual, but it could be something I
missed, and the coach is still in storage, so it will be a bit before
I can look.
I know that earlier Sahara models were on a lighter chassis that had 6
hole wheels, those models had smaller brakes. If memory serves me
correctly, the calipers were a 2.5 inch bore.

Generally speaking, as Safari is very well known for its endless
exceptions, from '96 model year forward, I believe most if not all
Saharas had the 10 hole wheels, with the bigger brakes (2.88 inch
caliper), as did the Serengeti and the Continental lines. Some where
around '98 or '99 the Continental and possibly the Serengeti lines got
slightly bigger brakes, but I don't recall the caliper bore size.
Again, this is just generally speaking, I'm sure there is an oddball
exception out there.

The '94 and '94 model years were a mixed bag. For an example, my '95
Serengeti has the same 2.88 inch bore calipers all the way around, yet
another members '95 Serengeti has 2.88 inch in the rear, but 2.6 inch
bore calipers in the front, and different pad in the front too.
Another thing to note, the older model coaches were lighter,
especially the Sahara line.
