Not getting any charge to House Batteries, No Galley Power

Post by noslowsled »

Hi All
So, I think I may have a problem that has come up with my Freedom 20 inverter or transfer switches.
Every time I plug in shore power it cuts power, lights, gfci plugs, tv monitor in galley. I also noticed that it doesn't appear to be charging my house batteries either.
I cleaned up all my battery cables and terminals and found a bad lug on the Positive side of the house battery bank. I changed out that lug with a new one .
It started charging again briefly, then loosing power in the galley and no charge.
I checked to see if I could get my batteries to charge with the generator or 12 volt from the alternator, It doesn't appear  to be working from there either.
I momentarily got power and charging when i pushed  the bottom transfer switch center button, but tripped almost immediately after.
checked my four house batteries all had a good charge of 6.5 volts. Freedom 20 Inverter did not pop any of its breakers.
Not sure what to do from here, any help would be appreciated.
Thank You

'Colin,

When you are plugged in and having this issue, do your front and rear
a/c units work on shore power, during this problem? If you have not
tested if they work, please check and see if they work, or if just one
of them works.

Please post a picture and clarify the button you pushed on the transfer switch.

It sounds like there is an issue possibly in a few different places.
It could be burnt contacts in the transfer switch, loose wiring in the
transfer switch, power post, or where your cord connects to your
coach.
Do you have a power cord reel? If yes the brush contacts and slip
rings can get pitted and arch out/burnout. All these things have to be
checked.

It is also possible that the wiring in the inverter is loose and
arching out or the transfer switch in the inverter is acting up. Test
and see if the a/c units are working (one or both), and then we will
have a bit of a better idea where the problem might be.

'Colin:  It’s interesting you mention a black wire coming from an “upper ats unit”.  I assume you mean ac unit.  I’m replying because my husband, Darryl, spent many hours troubleshooting why the front roof-top AC stopped working out of the blue last year.  He found a new motor (I posted that info a year ago - the original part number has been replaced with a NEW part number, making these motors hard to locate), and replaced the motor, after testing other elements.  While it was on his work table, he tested both motors, and the old motor actually worked!  He then found that it was a very poorly secured (black) wire that had eventually worked its way use - probably from driving down the road.  It was all within the unit in the ceiling, so maybe your hanging black wire has an important use!
Good luck!

' To second what John has said, I had a problem with my power reel and it caused caused problems that I thought was the inverter. If you check the link in my signature and click thru... there is a presentation on my power reel fixes. You may not have the same reel or problem but it is srarting point.
I have my 2KW Xantrex that I will list on Ebay shortly... I changed to a 3KW unit. It and the drivetrain were about the only things the Burger Flippers re-purposed as expert RV techs, didn't manage to damage, ...its built like a tank. My guess would be that your inverter is ok. If you can get/borrow a Digital Volt Meter(Fluke... etc) with a "Min/Max Hold" setting, you can set it to Min and capture if the input is dropping out.
