Replacing the isolator with the boost switch

Post by robert.lewis.tl@gmail.com »

'
Is there any reason not to connect an ignition ON signal to the sense signal of a 12v relay and then tie that to the  the switched wire from the boost switch on the drivers console?

I want to replace the isolator with the boost switch design Jim suggested but I don't see an easy access to a signal from the ignition switch in the engine bay. I can get one from the relay panel in the battery bay but would rather use the front of the coach.

Also can someone please point to the pdf that was posted on this... saved it, and now can't find itImage.

Thanks

Robert,

Study my "safari iso pnl" drawing and you will find that ignition wire 233 is present at the isolator panel in the engine box and it activates the air compressor relay. How else would the compressor know to start when you turn the key on?

'Jim,

Robert has an air ride coach, which has an engine driven air
compressor, so it is likely that his coach doesn't have this wiring
setup.

Robert,

I emailed you regarding this, that it can be done using a relay, so
why the doubt???

I don't think I have that kind of compressor, my compressor is a Bendix and driven by gears off the Cat 3126B.
I know there are signals in the battery bay relay, fuse block but I didn't want to splice into these. Hence the request to connect to the boost switch via a relay.

Sorry, forgot the newer units are air bag suspension.

Attached is my drawing for what I think you want. Let me know how this works.

'Jim,

Thank you! That is perfect, just what we need to do the conversion
properly. I like the redundancy that you built in, where the solenoid
can be closed by either battery bank, as you never know which one gets
low.

The only thing that should be tweaked, is the first half of your Note.
With this system implemented, there is no need to wedge the boost
switch if the alternator quits charging, as the boost switch will
already be closed when the coach is running, so all one has to do is
start their generator and it will charge both battery banks.
Keep the second half of the note, regarding the relay keeping the
battery banks isolated.

I would also like to make a note to the rest of our members, pay
attention to your voltage gauge. If the alternator quits charging, all
six batteries will eventually drain if you don't pay attention and
notice that your voltage is sagging. If gauge is reading 12.5v or
less, the alternator is not charging. So, start the generator ahead of
time, don't wait till you have a "don't shift" warning on the
transmission pad, as by that time it is too late, you will not likely
have enough battery power left to start your generator at that point.
As one member recently described the scary scenario when the batteries
die completely. All systems shut down and the engine stops running.
When that happens, you lose power steering and more importantly, you
lose your power brake assist from the hydroboost, meaning you
essentially lose about 85% (if not more) of you braking ability. So,
again, pay attention to that voltage gauge, as it is just as critical
as your engine temp and oil pressure gauges.

JIm, thank you again for this and many other diagrams you have
generously provided.
