There is a white wire from the alternator that I think is carrying this voltage. It seems to me that this will drain the coach batteries over time. With many wiring mistakes on this coach I'm not sure if this wire is even supposed to be there or where you goes.

On Jim's diagram there is no second wire from the alternator. I know there's been some discussion about a sense wire so I'm not sure if this is something that is supposed to be on this alternator or not. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I understand the way your alternator is wired. But this coach has been nothing but a series of incompetent wiring and other problems. Many RV Specialists have worked on it,  I can see their handiwork and I've had to redo all of it. The previous owners did not do any of the work themselves and from what I can discern they were badly taken advantage of.
My coach had a light 18awg wire from the output of the alternator to the coach battery somewhere ...where exactly I do not know, and the heavy output charging cable. It seemed incorrect to me and so I posted and others as well said that that wire was not needed especially if using the boost solenoid as the isolator so I removed it and it works as expected. I think my alternator is a 22 SI but I would have to re-check. Now the only wire now from the alternator is the heavy gauge current wire for charging which now goes to the coach bus bar.

'Robert,

The alternator output wire should be connected to the chassis bus bar,
not the coach/house bus bar. In case the solenoid fails, the
alternator charging priority has to be the chassis/engine batteries.

One Wire alternator: Alternator sense wire (was: Replacing the isola

Post by mel96safari »

'RobertI believe a sense wire, if/when needed, is dependent on the make/model of the alternator... not on whether you use a solid state battery isolator or the boost soleniod as the battery isolator.
I found that it would take a major rewire of both the house and the chassis charging systems, (as well as some component replacing), to make my coach compatible with any so called "one wire alternator".
A truck repair tech at a shop in Louisiana charged me $250 to learn enough about my coach so he could  teach me that.

Point taken... I do not have any experience with the charging system on this coach and am following your and others expertise. The $250 is typical, I hope at least they didn't damage something and leave you to get a long way off before it failed... Sorry I have a lot of sore points against these double digit IQ RV techs whose sum of both digits add  up to less than 7.
One thing I am glad to have done is to have removed the isolator and wired it to Jim's design and John's suggestions. One less piece to fail IMO.

Re: One Wire alternator: Alternator sense wire (was: Replacing the i

Post by mel96safari »

For that $250 they did a lot of useless work:1.) They removed my alternator and broke a brush wire while while replacing the internal voltage regulator, which could not work when they re-installed it
2.) They tried, (but did not charge me for), a new "one wire" Delco Remy alternator which was not compatible with my original SMC/Magnum charging system and components...(Said they would have to "rewire everything" to make it work).3.) Meanwhile they ground OFF, (removed), the locating pin from my serpentine belt tensioner pully
4.) Finally they re-installed my original "no longer working alternator", and the belt tensioner they had "ruined", and sent me on my way.
Later that week I removed my alternator and took it to an alternator shop (who repaired it for $30) ...and I bought and installed a new belt tensioner, (a $100+ part at the time).
