Dash Vent System

Post by Jumpnjoe59 »

'The time it takes to change from floor to dash vents can take not seconds but minutes. I have taken off the front cover in the RV and see any lose vacuum hoses but notice the little ASF vacuum pump never shuts off. The suction side is connected but nothing in the pressure side. This may be normal. Shouldn't the vacuum pump shut off and some time? The vacuum pump appears to be a ASF 5002 VD.

'I had a similar issue that I originally believed to simply be a vacuum leak. But,I had to replace the vacuum pump instead. It would not shut off either, nor would the vacuum operated doors open or close. Replacement pump was not cheap but it solved the problem immediately. I checked the vacuum with a gauge and it barely pulled a vacuum. New pump sucked that gauge right on down.

'I had the same thing happen, except my heater wouldn't change vent positions at all. Checked the pump and it had a torn diaphragm. I did a search using the numbers on the pump and found one that was very close but had a slightly higher cfm. Can't find the info on the pump. As I recall it was about $65. The one negative about the pump I purchased is it sounded like a small motorboat behind the dash when running. I was able to quiet it down quite a bit by adding a piece of  tubing to the inlet side and feeding it down through the floor.'

'Joe,

That looks similar to my OEM unit, and should be sufficient. If you
can find specs for your original one, try to compare the cfm rate on
both of them. If it is similar or more, it will do the job.

The dash does not require a lot of vacuum volume to operate, so the
large noisy ones, that are often suggested, are an expensive overkill,
that will drive you nuts with the noise.

Be sure to check for leaks. If you have a leak, it will cause the pump
to burn out, making run constantly, which it is not designed to do.
I installed an additional on/off switch, in case I have a leak that I
can't address immediately, I now can shut the pump off, to keep it
from burning up.

'I found on mine that the manifold type plug behind the dash control was not making a good seal. Just pushed the push on nuts tighter and that took care of it.  Another item that was bad on mine was a piece of the 1/8” hard tubing that went under the front of the coach to a vacuum control on the heater box had disintegrated. Those 2 things plus a new pump and all is well with my system.
