Weak Bay Door Gas Strut - Remedy Modification

Post by robert.lewis.tl@gmail.com »

Almost all of my gas struts holding the bay doors open have failed and fall down. Replacing them is easy if cost were not a problem. But given that the cost was in the hundreds of dollars I used less a expensive modification. The presentation shows how to retain the strut function and hold the door open safely with very little cost and work. It can be done per door in minutes.

'That’s nigh on brilliant! I have 1/2 inch metal pipe cut into prop rods, but I think it’s time for them to go

Now if I could just get the darn things to stay shut and locked. Has anyone McGivered that? And, yes, I do know about the adjustment plates. Most of mine are extended out so far that the screws barely have anything to grab onto. I need another mechanism to keep them closed.

' Hi Mush
I had that on one door, it. would pop open at worst times. Once it happened at a light and a kind person ran into the lane and closed for me.  It might be different from yours but I will try and post my fix in the next few days.
