Won’t turn over

Post by cefisher2@live.com »

'I have a Safari 3010 with a ford chassis. It won’t turn over with the key. The generator is the same way. I feel like I’m missing something like a switch or something. I can jump across solenoid and it cranks right up. I really would love to have a Owner’s manual on it or just some more knowledge.'

'cefisher2,

Please give us more info to go on.
What is the model year of your coach?
What model is it? Is it a Class A or Class C???
What engine and transmission it have?

How are you jumping the solenoid? By connecting the two large wires,
or providing 12v power to the signal wire (the small wire) of the
solenoid?

Have you replaced the batteries recently, or had any work done to the coach?

Please try to give us as much info as you can so we can better help you.

Please note my signature. It has all the basic information of my coach
and my first name. Please try to do the same, as this helps us keep
track of various posters with similar problems and helps us identify
the coach you have.

'If you can jump from the hot 12v side of the solenoid to the center terminal and it turns over, you have a bad solenoid.  If not it could be you ignition switch or wiring in between. I have had to replace my solenoid several times on my 1999.  I also have had to replace the ignition switch.Dean S1999 Safari Sahara'

'I’m jumping from the battery to the small post on the solenoid. When you turn the key like your gonna crank it all the lights go off like it taking power but nothing happens. The solenoid that’s in the battery box will click but nothing happens.

I have replaced all the batteries recently.

'Clay,

The "clicking" solenoid that is in the battery box, is that a
different solenoid than the one you jumped from the battery to the
small post on the solenoid???

FYI, the solenoid that you did jump is working, no the trick is to
figure out why it is not getting the signal from the ignition start
position.

Our coaches are setup differently than the Class C RVs, so this will
be a bit more challenging to figure out, but I will do my best. One
thing I can say for sure, Safari was known not to color code their
positive and negative cables to the batteries, so it is very possible
that a positive wire could have ended up on a negative terminal and
when the solenoid in the battery compartment engages, it could be
creating a dead short.

Have a helper run the ignition switch for you, so you can test for
noticeable voltage drop when the key is put into the start position.
Also see if that solenoid or the large cable going to the solenoid
that is in the battery box, get hot. If they do, then likely some
cables were wired incorrectly. If there is no voltage drop and nothing
gets hot, then it is more likely that your ignition switch went bad.

Please post some pictures of the battery compartment and of the two
solenoids. Please take the photos further away, so the surrounding
areas can be seen also.

PS: Safari Class C RVs are a fairly rare find and probably the best
quality Class C ever made, and probably also with the most basement
storage too.

'The solenoid that is clicking is in the battery box. The one that I jump to start it is in the engine bay.

I’ve traced out all the wires to make sure that there is no short and that I have them all hooked up the right way.

The funny thing is whatever is doing is keeping the generator from cranking also. It’s the same way. No power to the small wire on the solenoid. To me it’s almost gots be a switch or something simple that I’ve missed. Or the solenoid in the battery box is bad and it controls the power to both the engine and the generator. I’m gonna take it this afternoon and test it with a meter. I’ll send some pictures when I do.'

' I would suggest checking the voltage on the solenoid sense wire in the battery bay, the small one. It should be at least 12v. Remove the wire and jump, make sure you have the + selected and not the ground.
