Subject: Re: [Safarifriends] Re: Yahoo hosted Safari site going away Robert (and Jim),
To a degree, I understand what you are saying, but it appears that you
are taking a very narrowly defined, lawyerly approach, regarding this
matter. It also seems like you have misunderstood or redefined the
meaning of profit. Same goes for Jim E, but to the other extreme.
Recouping expense cost, say for a software program, or the cost of
high storage capacity is NOT profit, unless you are charging more than
the actual cost. Also, saving money by doing your own work, with the
help of free tools like wiring diagrams or video tutorials by no means
is profit. Cost saving? Yes, absolutely! Profit? No, not by
definition nor common sense interpretation.
I understand where both, you and Jim E. are coming from. Too much
restriction, will, at a minimum, breed stagnancy, avoidance, and
eventual demise of the group. But for those like Jim, who kindly
choose to donate their time and financial resources to help and
benefit others, it is completely understandable to request that no one
profits off of their hard work. That said, the definition of profit
has to be realistic and reasonable. Maybe Jim's definition of profit
might be a bit narrow or skewed too, but more than likely, he just
misunderstood what Robert did, and the efforts he went through
"saving" all the content, for "our" benefit. On the other hand, if
someone was making and selling CDs of Jim's diagrams or selling "how
to" tutorials using Jim's or others members' content, then I can fully
understand being upset about someone profiting off of their free
content, but in Roberts case, where he went through the expense and
effort to preserve files to the benefit of all members, and offers an
"option" for members to preserve their own personal copy of all data,
at a small cost of needing to buy a software program to access the
data in a useful way. This scenario, by no means, falls under the term
profit, as Robert is not making any money from this, and it is just a
needed tool to access the data, same as needing a computer ($$) to
access data. To think otherwise would be like saying, ok, because
members need to by a computer and internet software to see the files,
that is making profit of my items that people are supposed to have for
free. There needs to be a realistic middle ground in all of this, as
both extremes are counterproductive. Even if well intended, these
extremes, kind of, come of looking a bit ridiculous, not to mention
totally unrealistic.
In either case, it is technically Jim's content and we have to oblige
to his terms if we want to use it. Hopefully he will understand the
practical side of technology required to view free content. It takes
electricity, computers, software, internet, etc. to view his content,
non of that is free, but also no member makes a profit off of his free
stuff.
Sorry to be blunt, but that is my two cents that will hopefully make sense.
