Low Battery voltage.

I was driving home yesterday when the battery voltage dropped, the do not shift light came on and down shifted to 5 th.  Pulled over voltage around 10.  Pushed the booster button, got voltage up to 14v, shifted to eutral and proceeded don home. Started generator and hoped the echocharger would help. Ended up pushing the booster about every 5 miles.

Checked chassis bateries when home. They charged up to 12.5 v   Trouble shooting reveals that the alternater is not charging.  The dreaded sense wire has zero volts.  Jumpered 12v to to bypass that wire to the alternator.

Out put went from 3-4 volts to 15.1v at the alternator.   14.6v at the isolator output.

Tried to trace the sense wire to its source but lost it in the big wad of wire.

I've got a couple questions. 1. Where exactly is the source supposed to be.  2.  Is it ok to jumper out the sense wire with a new wire?

I suspect the chassis batteries are done for since even at 12.5 volts it would not roll the engine.

Thanks for any advice.

'Rick,
Assume you have a DIODE-BASED  battery isolator.
If so, the sense wire can be wired to any location on the chassis battery side of the isolator.
So, at isolator, chassis battery, chassis battery side of boost solenoid, etc.
No problem in disconnecting it (from both ends, since the end toward the battery will be hot and you don't want a "loose" hot wire.
But, no reason to wire it to the same location as OE.

Sense wire (was: Low Battery voltage.)

'Correct
When my sense wire failed I ran a 14ga wire directly FROM the sense terminal of the alternator's internal voltage regulator TO a positive post on a chassis battery.(Later I found that the factory sense wire had broken off from its location on the one always hot terminal on the starter solenoid).Mel'96 Sahara

Re: Sense wire (was: Low Battery voltage.)

'Not that I can find. I plan on putting one inline on the new wire. If I recall, it should be 5 amps. Presently working on an oil leak from oil pressure sender. Can't start rig with it removed. The alternator was working properly with the jumper put in. I did test the battery isolator before hooking up the jumper.
