John,
Thanks for your help over the phone this morning. It was very helpful. i called Magnum energy as you suggested and was on hold for 1 hour and 7 mins, when it finally rang, i was disconnected! i called back and put my name in the hat for a call back when they had time, no call back today, I'll try on Monday. Thanks again for taking up two hours of your time...

My 2005 Safari Gazelle owners manual and the Caterpillar C9 operations/maintenance manual list 30 quarts initial fill. This brings the up to add mark, add additional 4 quarts to bring to full mark. It says remark the dipstick if different from original markings. Finally add 3 additional quarts to refill the new filter.

This totals 37 quarts.

Have any other owners used this procedure to establish their sump/systems oil capacity?

New owner, so I really want to get it right!

Follow up from original post. I verified the oil capacity and procedure with Caterpillar hotline (Greg) 877-777-3126. He agreed that I should use the instructions in the Caterpillar Operations/maintenance manual. SEBU7292-05 April 2005

37 quarts seems like a lot of oil considering when I acquired this motor home they were only using 23 quarts / oil change.

My 3126 Cat, with the aluminum deep sump oil pan, (#2 in the photo), always, and only, gets 28 quarts at an oil & oil filter change.
(Any more than 28 it spits out the slobber tube in the 1st 1-2 thousand miles)

Thank you for the reply, I will monitor any oil blowing out the tube, I have only taken short maybe 200 mile trips so far. I plan a cross country trip in January, pulling my Z71 Chevy pick up. If oil is coming out the tube I should be able to see it.

I was also concerned about oil pressure at idle, Caterpillar Hotline pulled up my pressures from the dyno test using my serial number. When new, they recorded 42psi under load and 18psi at idle. These are in line with what I am seeing now with 31,000 miles 16 years later.

I have the deep sump and run 28 quarts. First oil change I filled it with the listed 30 quarts. Engine puked out about 2 quarts then was happy. I'm also running with a home made catch can. When running the 28 quarts, my catch can gets about a cup in it between changes. No more oil spots on things behind the slobber tube.

Thanks for posting this Tom. How did you design yours? That is a project I wanted to do as well. The can seems a good way to go. I was thinking of one with filled with copper scour pads and a drain cock.

A quart/liter plastic bottle (like for soft drinks) makes a fine oil mist catcher. I just use a punch I heat up to poke holes around the top/neck so that surface area of all the holes combines well exceeds the surface area of the 1" ID crankcase breather hose. Just zip tie it to the hose with the hose about 1" from the bottom of the bottle. Being clear, you can also see when it needs to be emptied.

Overfill the crankcase and it will fill up very quickly! Filling the crankcase to the proper oil level and you only have to empty it at oil change intervals.

Thanks Brett, a very clever way to solve the problem... the best of have seen. I like being able to keep track of the amount of oil visually.
