detroit diesel

Post by demingboy »

Howdy.
Well our 1991 Safari ivory hi-tech 35 foot came with the detroit diesel engine. I read nothing good about them but so far ours is doing ok. We are approaching the 100 thousand mile mark without any issues. One thing I am not sure about and therefore my question is this.

We are going to attempt to start pulling a toad behind it. As it struggles going up big hills I am concerned that it will be more of a dog.
Runs pretty well out there on the road and can get up to speed just fine but its just kinda, well gutless.
So any insight from other owners would sure appreciate it.

your transmission shifter is your ally, figure out what RPMs is your best torque / horsepower from a Google search ( my 3126 is at 1832rpm) and shift down to that. Also good for wind flow through the rad! Probably NOT a race car speed going uphill but if you were in a rush, you should have flown there on a plane

I do not have a problem towing a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland behind me with my '01 Zanzibar with CAT 3126B. Sure, it slows down on going uphill and sometimes shifts down and slows to 40 MPH on very steep inclines but I just turn on my flashers, keep an eye on the water temperature and tranny temp and smile as people in a hurry go around me. I frequently pass semi's on the same steep grades going 25-35 MPH.

That is a MUCH more powerful engine. I suspect the DD 8.2 is 210 HP.
