When to replace shocks ??

Post by rvtips »

On a car if you bounce down on the bumper the car should stop after the first time, but on a moho how do you know when to replace them?
When I hit a bump on the freeway some times it feels like it bottoms out the air springs, and other time it is not as bad.It never goes up and down like a car with bad shocks.
I can't say it is any worst now than it was before it had 45,000 miles on it.:whistling:

It sounds like your ride height might be out of adjustment. Monaco should have ride height specs for your coach.
Worn out front shocks would usually give you multiple slow motion up and down movement of your suspension during the incidents you described, also you would likely get a lot of porpoising. If you get more than two up and down bounces when rolling over a speed pump that's also a sign of worn front shocks. The easiest way to tell if the rear shocks are worn out is if it looks like your toad is popping up and down constantly, while rolling along looking at your back up camera. When you see that happening, that means the back of your coach is bouncing while you're going down the road and the camera is bouncing up and down with it, making it look like it is your toad or trailer bouncing as you drive.

Does your coach have Airbags. My 2002 Sahara has a 4 airbag system. I adjusted the ride night by making adjustments for the airbags. Bingo my problem was solved, she now rides great.

How do you adjust the air bag ride height? I see the height they should be in my manual, but don’t remember seeing how to adjust.

You adjust the ride height valve-- either the valve itself or the rod that operates it. This should be checked at least annually and any time you run over road debris as the rods and valves can easily be damaged. Most coaches have three ride height valves-- two on one axle and one on the other.

Be sure you have safety stands before going under the coach.

RVTIPS,

I'm a bit confused, you initially stated that it seems like you, sometimes, bottom out against the air springs, and then you state that your ride is fine. If you are bottoming out against the air springs, you might either be overloaded or on the low side of ride height, or the ride height specs could be off. In either case, if you are not exhibiting the types of symptoms that I stated in my previous post, that it is likely that your shocks are just fine...

Mine was bottoming out and the adjustment on the rods moved to coach up just enough to keep it from happening. But your shocks could be bad as well.

The original Bilstein shocks on my '96 Sahara 3530, with SMC/Magnum Blue Streak Ellipti-Ride, (leaf spring suspension), where replaced at 134,018 miles.

(Bilstein p/n B46-2092 front, B46-2093 rear)

A really difficult topic to cover without detailed information.

So far, we have had replies from those with the following VERY different suspensions:

Leaf spring
Torsilastic
Air bag

Answers to ride questions will be very different as well depending on suspension.

So, please state clearly what suspension you are commenting on.
