CAT 3126B regulator (thermostat) - so many part numbers!

Post by chuckster »

Interestingly, I started looking around for a regulator (and gasket) to have on hand because they are cheap and they do go out. Going to the CAT site (parts.cat.com) and putting in my serial number (8YL) the parts list for the regulator pulled up the following:

115-4223: REGULATOR TP - 126-5466: GASKET
119-3075: REGULATOR - 126-5466: GASKET

Both have the same size specs but no operating temperature listed. So I call my local Cat dealership's parts department and give them my serial number and get a completely different part number:

284-5421 Regulator 222-5915 gasket

What gives?

Call Caterpillar Corp with your engine serial number and ask: 877 777-3126.

Will do Brett. Thought a CAT dealer would be using the same database as CAT.

Well, the 'calling CAT experience' for my first time was not very good. After holding a bit, a thick-accented lady (Chinese?) spent 5 minutes poking around and muttering about "internet issues" and such, giving me an old part number that she was sure that there was a new one for, telling me I had a very old serial number and old engine (LOL) and then referring me to the nearest CAT parts dealer. I think it was someone working from home using the CAT catalog and having internet problems. Sheesh.

The day before I called just after closing time (4PM Central) and had the option to leave a message and get a callback. I left name, CAT model 3126B, serial number and what I was looking for. No callback by 2PM so called back and got results above.
